Never been to Africa? Start here. An excellent city break destination to visit from the UK. It is easily accessible by air and is a good choice for your first visit to Africa. Marrakech sits on a plain in the shadow of the snow capped Atlas mountains. The country of Morocco itself is named after a derivation of the the city name. Marrakech (AKA Marrakesh) is known as 'the Pink City' from it's rose coloured buildings. There has been a city here since 1062. It flourished under the Almoravides empire which controlled most of northern Africa and a large part of southern Europe, so don't be surprised if you detect an Andulacian atmosphere at times. To do in Marrakech: Djemaa El Fna Square (somewhat ominously 'The Square of the Dead') is misnamed. As the main entertainment centre it comes alive in the evening with acrobats, snake-charmers, market stalls and a vibrant crowd.. The Medina bazaar - tr your hand at Arabic style haggling and pick up a bargain. Good for leather, ceramincs and carpets. The Dar Si Said museum - a fabulous collection of carpets, jewellery and Moroccan art. Try some Moroccan wine - robust and surprisingly good. Take a four wheel drive safari to the High Atlas mountains.
