The 2 main resorts in Banff are Lake Louise and Sunshine Village. Lake Louis offers the tougher terrain of the two. Most people stay in the village of Banff itself and commute to either Sunshine or Lake Louise each morning.
The snow is light and fluffy, but the cold can be a problem.
