We then travel north to the citrus farming area of the Western Cape and desert lands of Namaqualand en route to the Gariep (Orange) River, which marks the border with Namibia. Our first stop in Namibia is one of the natural wonders of Africa - the Fish River Canyon. At some places 500m deep and 160km long, this is the worlds 2nd largest canyon (after the Grand Canyon). Further north we enter the Namib Naukluft Park, the worlds oldest desert and location of the worlds highest sand dunes (up to 300m) at Sossusvlei. We explore this stunning area and climb a dune at dawn for a dramatic view of sunrise across the vast sea of sand. Sandwiched between the desert and the ocean is Swakopmund, a delightful coastal resort and a wonderful place to relax or to try optional activities including quad biking, sand boarding and skydiving. DAY 8 11 Further up the dramatic coastline we come to the enormous Cape Cross Seal Colony, home to some 80,000 seals. From here we pass through the spectacular rock formations of Damaraland at Spitzkoppe. and camp among the massive rock outcrops near ancient bushman paintings. Etosha National Park - a vast reserve of over 20,000 sq. km, surrounds a central salt pan and features some 114 mammal and 340 bird species. Here we enjoy morning and afternoon game drives and camp for two nights next to floodlit waterholes. From Etosha, we travel south to Windhoek, Namibias capital city, where our safari ends. Cape Desert Safari SCDS11 - Southbound DAY 1 5 Leaving Windhoek we travel north to Etosha National Park, a vast reserve of over 20,000 sq. km surrounds a central salt pan. We spend two days tracking game in this vast arid region and camp beside a floodlit waterhole. From Etosha we travel into Damaraland, an area of eerie landscapes and barren rocky outcrops and camp in tranquil Spitskoppe. Known as the Matterhorn of Africa we have the opportunity to see ancient bushman paintings here. From Spitzkoppe we head to the coast and visit the Cape Cross Seal Colony, home to 80,000 seals before arriving at Namibias premier coastal town of Swakopmund, where a number of optional activities such as quad biking and sand boarding are typically available.
