WINTER 2007 & 2008 WELCOME TO WINTER WELCOME TO WINTER There is something almost uncanny about arriving in a northerly winter destination. It's almost as if you have been deposited on a completely different planet. Compare the miserable, grey and muddy winters here in the UK with the snow covered landscapes of Finland, Sweden and Norway and you begin to understand why more and more people head north each year for a winter break. It's here in the north that you find the kind of winter that only exists in your childhood memories. FAMILY ACTIVITY HOLIDAYS For the first time we are dedicating a winter brochure solely to families. From intimate and uncommercialised Santa experiences to wilderness adventures with overnight husky safaris, there is a winter holiday here to suit all families and all ages. You can choose between our fixed programmes or use our tailor-made facility to design your own winter holiday. TRAVELLING RESPONSIBLY Much has been written lately about the environmental impact of flying. Here at Activities Abroad we always offset our air travel emissions and would encourage you to do the same. We offer some suggestions as to how you might do this on page 50. However, there is more to travelling responsibly than the environment. In remote and isolated regions such as Lapland, tourism has become a massively important contributor both socially and economically. In Finnish Lapland for example, tourism has become the main source of employment and income, replacing traditional industries such as forestry which have become increasingly mechanised. The massive importance of tourism in this remote corner of the world is illustrated by the fact that today 65% of the workforce are employed in service industries. Wherever possible, our philosophy is to employ local suppliers and use only locally owned accommodation. In this manner we help to maintain jobs in areas where unemployment was, until recently, very high. Additionally, we firmly believe in paying a fair price for the services provided by our suppliers regardless of where they are in the world. Tourism can be a positive force and our ethos is to ensure that both you and our suppliers benefit fully. DESTINATIONS As a result of the huge demand for our family winter holidays during 2006/07, we have been out and about researching new trips and new destinations. For 2007/08 we are offering an even wider range of holidays in Finland. We have included the world famous ICEHOTEL® in Swedish Lapland and, for the first time, we have added Norway as a winter holiday option. ADVICE Unlike many travel companies we send as many of our staff to as many of our destinations as possible. If you want additional information about our holidays please call on 01670 789 991 and we will always endeavour to put you through to the person who most recently visited your preferred destination. There is no substitute for first hand advice and we will be delighted to help you make the correct holiday choice for your family. 2
