38 In our opinion Barry Nolan There's a particular excitement about standing on the summit of Ruka Fell and gazing eastwards into neighbouring Russia. It's rather like being on a different planet. The winter wilderness reflects a thousand shades of white stretching as far as the eye can see. The sheer vastness of the landscape makes you feel pretty small. One thing is certain. I'd hate to get lost out there! Kuusamo Lapland Ruka The downhill skiing in Ruka is very possibly the best in Finland with 31 slopes many of which are floodlit. There's no doubt that this is the place to combine Nordic winter activities with the more traditional alpine pursuits. Accommodation - our opinion Ruka Ruka is situated close to the Arctic Circle and the Russian border in Eastern Finland. Despite being surrounded by mile upon mile of wilderness terrain the town has become an immensely popular outdoor centre. The surrounding fells, lakes, rivers and forests ensure that there is a huge diversity of activities available in this natural playground. It's not surprising then that Ruka attracts both the Finns and an increasingly international clientele. Rantisipi Rukahovi Hotel The ideal choice for combining Nordic winter activities with downhill skiing and snowboarding. The Rantisipi Rukahovi is probably Finland's best ski-in/ski-out hotel and enjoys a fabulous location in Ruka's main square. This central position is no more than 50 metres from the ski centre and nearest ski lift as well as making all of Ruka's facilities, bars and restaurants easily accessible. The hotel has 180 rooms in total, all of which have en suite shower rooms, air-conditioning, TV, mini-bar, pay per view video channel, hair dryer and clothes drying cupboards. There are two restaurants serving international cuisine but with local produce as much to the fore as possible. Dinner is generally a buffet presentation and it is also possible to upgrade to the à la carte menu. Evening entertainment includes live music and dancing. Additional facilities include three saunas (free to guests), bars and a sound-proofed basement night club. activitiesabroad.com To book call: 01670 789 991
