DAY THREE HUSKY SAFARI Your learning experience yesterday will stand you in good stead today as you head out again into the winter landscapes of Arctic Lapland covering between 25 and 40kms over the course of the day (distances may vary due to local conditions). Steadily you will gain more and more confidence in your ability to guide the dogs, a feeling that is reciprocated on their part too. Again, you will have lunch around an open fire and return for dinner at Base Camp in the latter part of the afternoon. DAY FOUR FREE DAY OR OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES Today is free to try other activities which can be booked locally. Canine enthusiasts will be more than happy staying at Base Camp. There is always plenty going on at the farm and it's fascinating to learn how the animals are trained from birth to become expert sled dogs. You may also want to take advantage of the "Dog Musher" library to further your knowledge and enthusiam. There is a host of activities available which can be booked and paid for locally. You could experience another husky safari, try a snowmobile trip, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or meet a Sami family and their reindeer herd. Alternatively, why not visit Karasjok and explore Norway's capital of Sami Culture? Of particular interest are the National Sami Museum, the Norwegian Sami Parliament and best of all perhaps, the Sapmi Visitors Centre with its excellent "Magical Theatre" film inspired by ancient Sami teachings and the Northern Lights. THURSDAY DEPARTURE OR EXTEND YOUR STAY Return transfers to Ivalo in good time for your flights. Alternatively, we can arrange an extension to your trip. AGENDA DAY ONE FLIGHTS, ARRIVAL AND TRANSFERS You will fly into Finland's Ivalo Airport where a taxi will be waiting to transfer you to Base Camp across the border in Norway. On arrival you will be welcomed, shown to your accommodation and then have dinner before an introductory meeting with your guide. DAY TWO INTRODUCTION TO DOG SLEDDING The early part of the morning is spent preparing for your departure. You will be kitted out with Arctic-proof clothing and introduced to your team. Depending on your personal strength, the guides will allocate you a team of either 4 or 6 dogs. You will receive instruction on how to look after your canine trail companions and control the sled. Then you are off! Your enthusiastic team will pull you away from Base Camp and into the snowy wilds. As the dogs knuckle down to concentrate on their work you'll find yourself engulfed by a near perfect silence. The rythmic hiss of the sled's runners breaking through the snow and the steady panting of the huskies are usually the only audible sounds. When you stop for lunch and the huskies settle down in the snow, the silence is complete, almost eerie. Lunch is prepared over an open fire and eaten out in the wilds before your return afternoon trip. Your guides will share their intimate knowledge of the vast nature that Pictures courtesy of Terje Rakke/Nordic Life, Trym Ivar Bergsmo and Jorn Tomter/Finnmark Reiseliv WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE PRICE? · Return flights from Heathrow to Ivalo (via Helsinki) · Return airport transfers · 4 nights in shared log built cabins (page 56) · Full board · Introductory Husky Safari .
