beaches
Most of the best and busiest resorts cluster around the south coast, in particular the breathtaking Maspalomas sand dunes. Four miles of dunes and beaches line the Maspalomas/Playa del Ingles shoreline, and there are a couple of beaches in Puerto Rico to sunsoak in the islands hottest resort. With watersports galore, there are quiet coves too for tranquillity.
nightlife
Puerto Rico has a lively variety of bars, but Playa del Ingles is definitely the most popular place to party with countless clubs, pubs and busy bars. Elsewhere the night scene is more low-key, with ample restaurants and a scattering of bars for more leisurely evenings.
getting around
With tours by jeep, coach, catamaran and camel, exploring this island can be great fun. A local bus service operates on the coast road to link the southern resorts, and there are regular services to the island capital. To explore the island, a hire car would give you more scope.
places to see
Set between two bays, the capital, Las Palmas, is worth a visit for its Old Town, museums and cathedral. For sheer drama, visit Bandama the only clear visible crater in the north west of the island. And make time for Puerto de Mogan for fresh seafood in the fishing port town.

Facilities San Agustin offers a selection of watersports on the beach, with scattered bars and restaurants. An endless choice of bars, restaurants and nightclubs await you in Playa del Ingles. Must see Visit the astounding sand dunes surrounding Campo de Golf. Approx 30 - 40 minutes from the airport. See pages 78-80.
