Classic Wine Journeys are for that matter just across the border in Slovenias Brda. For this part of the tour we stay in the lovely Italian city of Udine with its little canals that run beneath and alongside the streets. It is a wonderful and little known city which is a delight to stroll around. Udine is near the Colli Orientali and Collio wine regions. In these regions our visits include the award winning Le Vigne de Zamo and Livio Felluga. Friulis wines are not often seen in the UK, which is a pity for they are among the top white wines that Italy produces and are highly appreciated on the domestic market. Clients on previous tours have been most impressed, indeed by the wines on both sides of the border. On our last day we stop off for a tasting with the excellent Vie di Romans with their stunning vineyards in Friuli-Isonzo, before ¾ying out of Venice. As with many A&C tours, especially the Classic Wine Journeys, this tour is pioneering, in wine content and in visiting little known and beautiful corners of Europe. It gives you a special insight into the destinations unlike on ordinary holidays. So, do join us to ½nd out more about these beautiful and relatively undiscovered places and to enjoy their superb food and wine. The Wine Guide is Gordon Ritchie. Brda Slovenia & Friuli Monday 7 - Saturday 12 July This tour combines the little known wines of Slovenia and the glorious whites of Friuli in Italy. We start in Slovenias picturesque capital city, Ljubljana, a small bustling University city. The River Ljubljanica runs through the city and there are plenty of riverside cafés in which to relax and watch the world go by. The two wine regions in Slovenia are in the North-East and South-West of the country. First we visit the North-East for the much improved wines from near the Hungarian border. The most impressive Slovene wines hail from the Brda and Vipava regions in the South West of the country which immediately borders Italy and the Friuli wine region. After leaving Ljubljana, we drive down through Vipava to Brda. This is just over the Slovenian border from Collio (both Brda and Collio mean hills). Effectively they are the same region, the borders here have been pretty ¾uid, the area having once been part of Venice, later part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and a much fought over region in WW1 with more changes at the birth of Yugoslavia and again on its collapse. On the Slovenian side well taste Malvasia, excellent Chardonnays and Ribolla Gialla. Visits include the Simcic winery and the Brda Enoteca. Italys Collio region is best known for outstanding whites including Sauvignon, but there are also complex reds here especially made from Cabernet and Merlot; as there Udine, Loggia del Lionello Outline Itinerary Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6.
