The New World
This outstanding tour visits the vineyards of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay which are in spectacular locations. All 3 countries have made advances in wine quality and this has ½rmly established them on the world wine scene. Chile is the best known, but Argentina has huge potential and Uruguay is a big surprise. Our South American wine experience begins in Montevideo, the elegant and relaxed capital of Uruguay, which is attractively located on the River Plate. Here, well discover the powerful Tannat grape in a leisurely and entertaining day spent with the exuberant Daniel Pisano and at the beautiful wine estate of Juanico, with equally superb wines. Chile is 2690 miles long, only 56 miles wide at its narrowest point and between the high peaks of the Andes Mountains and the Paci½c Ocean. The proximity of the Andes has been a key to the success of these wines, as well as moderating the climate they act as a natural barrier against phylloxera, so much so that the vineyards of Chile are amongst the few remaining pre-phylloxera vines in the world. Over the next few days well be entertained to tastings and lunches at the leading wineries
of Montes, Antiyal and Casa Silva. Well discover regional styles and dedication. A highlight is our stay at a lovely private vineyard estate in the Maipo Valley. Here you can relax by the pool, play tennis or explore the vineyards on foot or horse back! We cross into Argentina from Chile driving over the Andes. Our route takes us through a narrow gorge between the snowcapped mountains, and through desert scrub of cacti and acacia bushes. We may well see condors soaring against the peak of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Andes. Argentina is the 5th largest wine producer in the world, and vines were ½rst planted in the 16th Century, however, it was not until the arrival of Italian immigrants that serious wine production began. With a strong domestic market Argentina was slower than Chile in grasping overseas markets, but that is all changing. An excellent 5* hotel in the bustling university city of Mendoza is our base. We taste or dine at wine estates including Cassone, Familia Zuccardi and Bodegas Salentein.
