May Bank Holiday Champagne Saturday 24 - Monday 26 May This tour will take you to four very different champagne ½rms who are all very much worth visiting. Launois in Mesnil sur Oger is one of the largest Grower-Producers and one of the best producers in Champagnes Côte des Blancs. Taittinger, our afternoon appointment, have lovely cellars which were carved out of the chalk by the Romans. We will taste a couple of their ½ne and elegant Champagnes. On the last day we visit Leclerc-Briant in Epernay. Pascal Le Clerc is one of Champagnes most uncompromising wine-makers. The rosé skates on the edge of red and the champagnes are provocatively pungent and highly individualistic. After this we have a tasting lunch at Roger Brun, which as ever, will involve tasting a large number of cuvées, (mostly from Aÿ) and be great fun! Billiot on the south side of the Montagne de Reims who makes a rich, full style and to B. Hatté based in Verzenay. This is on the north-east side of the Montagne (and reputed to be the coldest village in Champagne) makes traditionally styled wines, with a lighter yet assertive feel. On Monday morning, we visit the cellars of Veuve ClicquotPonsardin in Reims. This is a full and detailed tour which usually covers much of the history of this important House. Our last visit is to André Jacquart et ½ls in Vertus, (not to be confused with the large Reims co-operative, also called Jacquart). André Jacquart craft ½ne blanc de blancs champagnes from around Mesnil sur Oger. They will, by this stage, have all or almost all of their production from wines fermented in oak. We taste some superb champagne over our last lunch here. The visit at Hattés small and rustic cellar is a complete contrast. Well see wines stored in wooden barrels, in metal cuves and in under ¾oor tanks. (Also in the cellar are Madame Hattés jars of pickles). What follows is a very jolly tasting! On Monday morning we are very happy to visit Philipponnat. Whilst they are most famous for their single vineyard special cuvée Clos des Goisses, the whole range here is to our mind, very impressive. We then continue down the valley of the Marne to visit Champagne Tarlant where we meet the dynamic Benoit Tarlant and taste his excellent Champagnes over lunch.
