The New World
Hawkes Bay, we stay in the Art Deco city of Napier during the annual Art Deco Festival. To the South of Napier, at the foot of the North Island, we visit Martinborough, one of New Zealands premier Pinot Noir regions, where there are several outstanding exponents of this notoriously dif½cult grape. We then have a day in the capital, Wellington, for the museums, botanical gardens and shops. We cross from Wellington in the North Island to Picton in the South Island by ferry through the beautiful Marlborough Sound. - Then Marlborough, NZs most famous wine region, renowned for Sauvignon Blanc. We spend a couple of days with the regions top producers, including Cloudy Bay. From Marlborough we head down the coast on the Coastal Paci½c Train to Christchurch, which is one of New Zealands most spectacular train journeys. From Christchurch we ¾y to Queenstown and New Zealands fastest growing wine region - Otago - which is producing some stunning Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and lately, Pinot Gris. The tour ends here in Queenstown, the adventure sports capital of the world!
New Zealand
Saturday 9 - Monday 25 February 2008
New Zealand is a country blessed with spectacular natural scenery and open space. Wine regions are found from the north of the North Island to the south of the South Island. The climate, which ranges from near sub-tropical in the north to cool in alpine foothills in the south, gives a wide variety of wine styles. Quality though, is universally high as the industry made a unique decision to only produce quality wines. This special tour covers most of the country and visits many of the renowned beauty spots. It offers you a privileged insight - meeting wine-makers who put the country on the wineworld map. We have good accommodation and superb meals at some of New Zealands top winery restaurants. We begin in Auckland, a vibrant harbour city with over half of New Zealands population. The area is an important wine centre, and we visit the Matua, Huapai and Kumeu districts to the west of the city, and explore Waiheke Island with its unspoilt beaches, stunning scenery and excellent wines. Leaving Auckland, heading south, we will cover the important wine regions, ½nally arriving in Queenstown on the South Island at the end of the tour. We will drop in on several smaller, isolated areas en-route. Initially to Lake Taupo, New Zealands largest lake, via the Bay of Plenty, where we stay right on the shores of the Lake. For our next wine region,
It is possible to ¾y out ahead of the group or to stay on afterwards. There are many options to extend your holiday. You could travel up to the tip of the North island to the beautiful Bay of Islands which was the ½rst area to be settled by both Maori and European settlers; explore the glaciers of Mt Cook National Park; go whale watching at Kaikoura or ¾y home via the Paci½c Islands. Please call for the detailed itinerary or to discuss extensions. As we go to print there are only 6 places left. Book soon. The Wine Guide is Rosemary George M.W.
