The Douro Vineyard Walk Sunday 11 - Saturday 17 May Vineyard Walks This is probably our most spectacular walk. The walking is way off the beaten track and youll experience genuine rural Portugal seeing truly breathtaking, unspoilt countryside. We are based in the remotely located Quinta do Passadouro, a small, top quality Port Estate that also makes superb table wines. Indeed, this tour is as much about the new wave of table wines being made by energetic young wine-makers as it is about Port and its traditions. From this stunning setting we visit famous estates such as Noval and Warres Cavadinha. We are very interested in the rising stars of the Douro. Our walks take us to Quinta do Portal, Fojo, Niepoort and Quinta do Vale D. Maria who all make outstanding wines and Port. We take the train higher up the valley to walk in the Douro Superior. We also have a day above the main Port vineyards up around Favios where a good Moscatel wine is made. The area is extremely rural but there are one or two towns and we visit Lamego, the prettiest and most interesting. On the spring tour we will see the wild ¾owers. Good food and wine is included every evening as well as a picnic lunch and several of the young superstar wine-makers may join us for dinners. The accommodation is 2* standard. The rooms are fairly small, but are charming and en-suite. One day, we take the train that hugs the side of the Douro River - as featured by Michael Palin as one of his Great Train Journeys of the World. There are great views of this now calm but once turbulent river that in the past, carried the pipes of Port down to the lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. Despite the huge gradients that the terraces of the Douro Valley instantly conjure up, this walk is not an endurance test. There are steep sections but the walk is not arduous and the distances covered remain reasonable. There are optional extra sections which can increase the amount of walking too. On the last day we take you to Oporto where you can explore this lovely city on your own or perhaps ½t in an extra Port visit to one of the many Port lodges that line the river bank at Vila Nova da Gaia before being dropped off at the airport.
