Corfu Corfu holds a magnetic appeal for all tastes and ages, from families looking safe beaches, sports enthusiasts seeking out the thrill of water-sports, ramblers coming to enjoy the scenic countryside or sun-worshippers simply in search of some of the best beaches in Greece. The capital, Corfu Town, provides an atmospheric glimpse of ancient bygone civilisations, whereas popular seaside resorts such as St George and Sidari promise golden sands and a good choice of restaurants and bars. Corfu Town Corfu Palace p205 Sidari Transfers: 1hr 10mins (coach), 35mins (taxi). With a Canal d'Amour which `promises' you'll find `true love', a vast sandy beach with shallow waters and heaps of water-sports, lots of tempting places to eat out and socialise, including a few discos, Sidari (about 38kms from Corfu Town) caters for all. Summertime p219 Transfers: 5/10mins (taxi). Walking through Corfu Town is like taking a trip back in time. Venetian houses, the popular esplanade, Byzantine churches and fortresses, the Palace of St Michael and St George, even a cricket pitch! Add to this several museums, the island's Patron Saint Spyridon Church, narrow streets full of atmosphere, great tavernas and bars plus a wealth of ever-so-tempting shops and boutiques. The area of Alikes is 4kms away, close to the `disco-strip' for good entertainment. Paleocastritsa Transfers: 40mins (coach), 30mins (taxi). The most picturesque spot in Corfu with amazing views everywhere you look, not least from `Bella Vista' or the Monastery. There are four bays (three with water-sports) and taxi boats provide access to other ones. There's a good sprinkle of tavernas and shops along the twisting road that leads to the village. You'll find that the majority of bars and tavernas have impromptu folklore shows at night. While steep hills contribute to the splendid views, they do make the area quite unsuitable if you have walking difficulties. Maria Paleocastritsa Thomas Aghia Triada p213 p214 p215 p215 Agios Ioannis / Benitses Costa Blu Marbella Adonis Hotel Aqualand Village p206 p207 p208 p209 Transfers: 40mins (coach), 30mins (taxi). Not a resort as such but a fairly large area with a few bars, tavernas and lots of small bays stretching along the main coastal road on the outskirts of Benitses. Kontokali Kontokali Bay p204 Transfers: 30mins (taxi). Gouvia sits in pretty surroundings and boasts a large yacht marina. It offers good beaches, shopping, a wide choice of entertainment and is just 11kms north of Corfu Town. Ten minutes walk from Gouvia is Kontokali with a few restaurants, tavernas and bars plus a good beach. Kavos Transfers: 1hr 45mins (coach), 1hr (taxi). Fringing the southern tip of the island, Kavos is definitely not for the faint-hearted! It's one of the hottest destinations in the Med for the youth market where lazy days by a glorious sandy beach are followed by wild nights in the huge selection of bars and clubs which pack the resort and spill out into the streets. Corfu Sea Gardens Elli Cavo Bianco p210 p211 p212 Kommeno Bay Grecotel Corfu Imperial p202/203 Transfers: 30mins (taxi). Set in a sunning and tranquil bay, Kommeno is the ideal place to come to for peace and relaxation. Magnificent views and scenery is the attraction here where you can enjoy lazing down the beach soaking up the sun.The resort of Dassia is close by and offers a wide range of attractions. St George/Yialiscary Bay Lord Complex Paradise Palm Beach Hotel Golden View Hotel p216 p216 p217 p218 Transfers: 45mins (coach), 40mins (taxi). The 5kms-long stretch of wonderful golden sands is a welcoming sight to sunworshippers as well as to windsurfing, water-skiing and paragliding enthusiasts. About 45 minutes drive from Corfu Town, this lovely area on the south-west coast is a good selection of tavernas and shops plus a couple of music bars. Inevitably, new developments are taking place, making St George slightly busier every summer. 201
