set against a range of pink granite peaks. The best of the white sand beaches is on Wine Glass Bay, where your trail of footprints is likely to be the only sign of human life. As well as safe swimming you can explore the peninsula on numerous walking trails, with guided hikes, nocturnal animal spotting trips and 4WD tours arranged by the awardwinning Freycinet Lodge where you'll be staying, with several rooms overlooking Great Oyster Bay.

Launceston
Highlight of the day is a 4WD afternoon and evening tour to the island's untouched northeast corner to see some of Tasmania's unique wildlife, including wallaby, possum, wombat, quoll and bandicoot, in its natural habitat. The tour also includes a gourmet `bush tucker' dinner featuring game, fresh produce and Tassie wines and beers. You'll stay at Peppers Seaport, located bang on the Tamar waterfront.

Day 9
Port Arthur
Head south towards the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur, Australia's most famous penal settlement, with plenty of time to explore this harrowing but fascinating site. Twenty minutes from the site is Eaglehawk Neck and the delightful Osprey Lodge Beachfront guest house.
Days 7 and 8
Freycinet NP
Assuming you want to linger a while longer on Tassie - and most British visitors do - you could then drive to Freycinet. The National Park is a scenic heaven, with clear blue waters and a blanket of bush Day 10

Drive back to Hobart - less than an hour for your flight back to the mainland.
