Twizel (nr Mount Cook)
vineyards renowned for their outstanding pinot noirs, chardonnays, pinot gris and rieslings, with escorted wine tours easily prearranged (£60). Accommodation is in the four-bedroom lodge belonging to the Stoneridge Estate on the shores of nearby Lake Hayes, away from the general bustle of town and surrounded by vineyards

A scenic stopover en route to Queenstown, with the opportunity to take a flight along the Alpine peaks for a close-up inspection of Mount Cook en route (£121). The night is spent in the stunningly located Matuka Lodge, which has a blend of contemporary and antique furniture, original art works and unique artefacts.

Day 15 Return your car to the airport for your onward flight, or consider extending your New Zealand itinerary by continuing up the west coast, further south to the Fiordlands or across to Dunedin, famous for its wildlife.

Accommodation as above, transfer and return ferry to Waiheke Island, 12 days' car hire and ferry crossing from North to South Island. Tours are optional at approximate prices shown.
