Historic South Africa 11 Days / 8 Nights from £3,195 Private Journey · Colonial Accommodation · Rovos Rail · Cape Town, Pretoria & Johannesburg Explore the spectacular scenery and diverse cultural influences of South Africa while staying in Orient-Express properties, notable for beautiful and varied scenery. End the journey in Johannesburg, with a chance to learn about the birth of this newly democratic country. Day 1 To Cape Town: Fly overnight from London to Cape Town with British Airways. (N) Days 2 Cape Town: Arrive and take a short orientation tour of Cape Town, including a cable car ascent up Table Mountain (weather permitting). Transfer to the Mount Nelson (see page 24) for 4 nights. Afternoon at leisure. (D) Day 3 Cape Town: Full day tour of the Cape Peninsula. Visit the pretty seaside suburbs of Camps Bay and Hout Bay and travel out to Cape Point. Return via the penguin colony at the old British Naval Base in Simon's Town, and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. (B) Day 4 Winelands: Full day tour of the winegrowing region, an area of rolling hills and fertile valleys. Visits include Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. There will be two wine tastings, a cellar tour and lunch at a wine estate. (B, L) Day 5 Cape Town: Day at leisure or take an optional excursion to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for three decades, or to one of Cape Town's townships, where you can interact with the local community. (B) Day 6 Rovos Rail: Transfer to Cape Town Station and board Rovos Rail (see page 23) for the 2 night journey to Pretoria. En route, visit the picturesque village of Matjiesfontein. (B, L, D) Day 7 Rovos Rail: On arrival in Kimberley, the diamond-rush city, take a tour of the `Big Hole' and Mine Museum. (B, L, D) Day 8 To Johannesburg: Arrive at Rovos Rail's HISTORIC SOUTH AFRICA Code PRIVATE JOURNEYS Day 9 Johannesburg: Full day tour of Johannesburg, including the Apartheid Museum, the Hector Pieterson Memorial and the township of Soweto.
