Escorted Group or Private Journey · Pompeii & Herculaneum · Vatican City · The Colosseum This tour combines two of the greatest centres of classical Roman civilisation: Rome and the Bay of Naples. Taking in Ancient Rome, the fascinating historical state of Vatican City and the excavated remains of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Villa Oplontis, this itinerary takes the visitor back in time to the world of Ancient Italy.
Day 1 To Rome: Fly from London Gatwick to Rome with British Airways. Transfer to Hotel Massimo D'Azeglio for 3 nights. Afternoon at leisure. (N) Day 2 Vatican City: Full day tour of the Vatican City, including the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel, with its magnificent barrelvaulted ceiling that took Michelangelo four years to complete. Continue with a walking tour of St. Peter's Basilica and the Colonnade. (B) Day 3 Rome: Morning walking tour of Ancient Rome, including the Colosseum, the Palatine, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Afternoon at leisure. (B) Day 4 To Sorrento: Morning transfer to the railway station and take the train to Naples. Upon arrival, transfer to the Europa Palace Hotel in Sorrento for 5 nights. Remainder of the afternoon at leisure. (B) Day 5 Phlegraean Fields: Full day visit to the Phlegraean or `Fiery' fields, an area humming with volcanic activity. Visits include the volcanic crater of Solfatara, Pozzuoli amphitheatre, the thermal springs and ruins of the imperial palace at Baia, and the cave of Sibyl at Cuma. (B)
St Peter's Basilica, Vatican
Although they are not as extensive as Pompeii, these ruins are superbly-preserved. Afternoon at leisure. (B) Day 8 Paestum: Full day at leisure or optional visit to the well-preserved Greek temples at Paestum. Dating from the 7th century BC, these Magna Graecian monuments form one of Italy's most majestic sites. (B) Day 9 To London: Morning at leisure. Afternoon transfer to the airport and fly to London Gatwick with British Airways. Extension Tour + Amalfi Coast
12 Days / 11 Nights from £2,085 Extend your stay in Italy relaxing on the Amalfi coast, an idyllic stretch of coastline lined with small villages, lovely beaches, restaurants and shops. Day 9 To Amalfi: Leave the group this morning and travel to Amalfi. Stay 3 nights at the Santa Caterina Hotel. (B) Days 10 - 11 Amalfi: Days at leisure. (B) Day 12 To London: Morning transfer to the airport and fly to London Gatwick with British Airways. (B)

Day 6 Oplontis & Pompeii: Morning visit to the excavated luxury imperial villa at Oplontis, decorated with exquisite paintings. Continue to the extensive ruins of Pompeii. Visits include the once-imposing basilica, the forum and the oldest-known Roman amphitheatre, which was built to seat up to 20,000 spectators and formed
the centre of city life. (B) Day 7 Herculaneum: Morning visit to the ruins of Herculaneum, destroyed by an earthquake in AD63 before being buried by a river of volcanic mud after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
