The first countries to convert to Christianity in the early 4th century, both have a rich ecclesiastical heritage. This tour explores the wonderful churches, cathedrals and monasteries of the region, as well as looking at some of the other sites of interest, including Roman temples, troglodyte cities and Stalin's birthplace. (B) Day 5 Tbilisi: Full day's sightseeing in Tbilisi, including the dominating 4th century Narikala Fortress, the State and Art Museums and the 5th century Metechi Church, considered to be the first church built in Tbilisi. (B) Day 6 Mtskheta: Morning visit to Mtskheta, the spiritual heart of Georgia. Visit the Jvari, the Samatavro Church and the Cathedral of Sveti-
Tskhoveli, built on the grave of Sidonia, who died clutching Christ's robe. Continue north to the Georgian Military Highway for a visit to Ananuri Fortress. (B) Day 7 Davit Gareja: Full day visit to Davit Gareja, a complex of 22 monasteries caved into the rock. Visit the Lavra Monastery and Udabno, located on a ridge overlooking Azerbaijan and containing exquisite frescos. (B) Day 8 Tbilisi: Day at leisure in Tbilisi or optional excursion to Kakheti, Georgia's principle winemaking region, visiting the majestic 11th century Alaverdi Cathedral, the elegant church of Gremi and the monasteries of Shuamta and Ikalto. (B) Day 9 To London: Morning transfer to the airport and fly to London Heathrow with British Mediterranean Airways. (B) Discovery Tour: Cox & Kings uses the best available accommodation and transport in Armenia and Georgia. The accommodation standard should be regarded as tourist class. The tour involves some long drives and walking on uneven terrain. Please see page 9 for an explanation of `Discovery Tours'. Day 1 To Yerevan: Afternoon flight from London Heathrow to Yerevan with British Mediterranean Airways. Late evening arrival and transfer to the Hotel Metropole for 3 nights. (N) Day 2 Yerevan: Morning tour of Yerevan, including Republic Square, the Opera House and the National Museum. Afternoon visits to Geghard, a monastery with sizable underground chambers, and the nearby Roman temple of Garni. (B) Day 3 Khov Varip, Zvartnots & Echmiadzin: Drive south to visit the historic Khov Varip Monastery, a famous pilgrimage site close to the Turkish border. Continue to Echmiadzin, the ecclesiastical heart of Armenia, visiting the ruins of Zvartnots cathedral en route. (B) Day 4 To Tbilisi: This morning, depart for Tbilisi. En route visit the Byzantine monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat, both UNESCO World Heritage listed buildings, dramatically located
