See the famous sights of the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Giant Pandas and the Giant Buddha at Leshan. Discover some of the less visited, ethnically diverse parts of China with a visit to the traditional province of Yunnan, and stay at the luxurious new Banyan Tree, set near the ancient cobblestone town of Lijiang. The tour ends in Chengdu, from where there is a great choice of extensions on offer, to destinations including Tibet, the Yangtze River, Guilin and South East Asia's beaches.
1 night at the Harbour Plaza Hotel. Afternoon visit to the Stone Forest. (B) Day 8 To Lijiang: Morning flight to Lijiang, via Kunming. Stay 3 nights at the Banyan Tree Villas. (B, D) Day 9 To Lijiang: Morning visit to the ancient Dayan town of Lijiang, including a guided walk and a visit to the Black Dragon Pool. Afternoon at leisure to explore Lijiang's maze of traffic-free streets, or perhaps relax at one of the many pavement cafés. (B) Day 10 Tiger Leaping Gorge: Tiger Leaping Gorge is claimed to be the deepest gorge in the world. Take a full day tour and see the first bend of the Yangtze River as it diverts east on its long journey to the Pacific. (B, L) Day 11 To Chengdu: Morning flight to Chengdu,
the lively capital of Sichuan province. Stay at the Sheraton Lido Hotel for 2 nights. This afternoon, visit the cottage of Du Fu, the Chinese poet. (B, L) Day 12 Chengdu: Morning visit to the Giant Panda Research Base. Continue to Leshan and see one of China's most amazing sights, the world's largest Buddha statue. Set on the banks of the Dadu River, the 1,200 year-old giant stone Buddha is 71 metres high and is carved into the cliffs. (B, L) Day 13 To London: Morning at leisure. Day 1 To Beijing: Overnight flight from London to Beijing with British Airways. (N) Day 2 Beijing: Arrive and transfer to the Peninsula Palace Hotel for a 3 night stay. Afternoon pedicab tour of the hutongs (back streets) and cruise on Shichahai Lake. (N) Day 3 Beijing: Morning tour of the Forbidden City, the huge complex of former palaces of the Ming and Qing Emperors. In the afternoon, visit the Summer Palace, surrounded by gardens on the shores of Kunming Lake. (B, L) Day 4 Great Wall: Travel to the Great Wall of China at Jinshanling Pass. This quieter section of the wall is in a dramatic setting, and has a series of forts and watchtowers. (B, L) Day 5 To Xian: Morning visit to the Temple of Heaven, a masterpiece of Ming architecture, where locals often gather to sing and play music. Fly to Xian and stay at the Sofitel for 2 nights. (B) Day 6 Xian: Morning visit to the site of the Terracotta Warriors. After lunch, continue to the Shaanxi History Museum. This evening, take in a Tang Dynasty music and dance show with dinner.
