Grand Classic China 22 Days / 19 Nights from £3,695 This all-encompassing journey is designed for the once-in-a-lifetime visit to China, travelling from Beijing in the north to Hong Kong in the south, staying in carefully chosen 5-star accommodation. Beginning in Beijing and Xian, the itinerary takes in the Forbidden City, Great Wall and Terracotta Warriors. In Sichuan Province, see giant pandas and the Leshan Buddha, before embarking on a luxury Yangtze cruise through the Three Gorges towards Shanghai. Continue though scenic southern China to Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge and the Li River near Guilin, before finishing in Hong Kong. Leshan Buddha, Sichuan Province Chinese Cuisine The diversity of China's geography and population has made Chinese cuisine one of the richest and most interesting in the world. Local dishes from different regions of China have become widespread and are now also an integral part of international cuisine in Britain. A cookery lesson offers the opportunity to learn how to cook authentic Chinese dishes from a local chef, and provides an insight into the role of dining as part of social interaction and Chinese culture. Cox & Kings has teamed up with local chefs and cookery schools in Beijing and Yangshuo to give you the opportunity to include a cookery class during your China tour. Yangtze Cruises A Yangtze cruise provides a relaxing mode of sightseeing in China, and there is a wide choice of cruise vessels and itineraries between Chongqing and Shanghai. The shorter 3 to 5 night cruises focus on the scenery of the Three Gorges between Chongqing and Yichang, home of the mighty dam project. The longer cruises of 6 and 9 nights also include areas of historical importance nearer Shanghai, such as Nanjing, the former Ming dynasty capital, and Mount Huangshan. Please see page 25 for the Yangtze cruise boats recommended by Cox & Kings. Mount Huangshan Area For centuries, the Mount Huangshan area has been popular with artists. Stay overnight on the summit and enjoy sunsets and sunrises surrounded by a mountain range of 72 peaks, mountain streams and alpine flora above a sea of clouds. Dotted around the paddy fields below are charming rural villages, with historic Chinese buildings that date from feudal times. Other popular activities include hiking and cable car rides. A visit to Huangshan combines well with the lakeside city of Huangzhou and the Imperial cities and water towns west of Shanghai. Mount Huangshan Imperial Eastern China 11 Days / 8 Nights from £2,095 The atmospheric cities and small towns of the Yangtze River Delta made up the heartlands of the ancient Chinese empire. This tour starts in exciting Shanghai, and continues to the relaxed city of Hangzhou by picturesque West Lake. There is a stay on Mount Huangshan - its scenery reminiscent of typical Chinese watercolours - a visit to a tea estate and a stay in Nanjing, a former capital of China. Finish in the water towns of Suzhou, Tongli and Zhouzhuang with their canals and twisting cobbled streets. West Lake, Hangzhou Evening Entertainment With thousands of years of history, China has one of the world's richest cultural heritages. In addition to seeing the historical sites, an evening at the Peking Opera in Beijing or a Sichuan Opera in a traditional teahouse in Chengdu will give you a rewarding insight into China's cultural history. In Shanghai, spend an evening at the State Acrobatics Show to see one of the oldest performing arts, which combines opera, dance and Kung Fu. In Guilin, see the Fisherman Cormorant Show, where locals demonstrate how fishing with birds once played a vital role in the lives of the people living along the Li River.
