10 Days / 8 Nights from £1,325 Escorted Group or Private Journey · Historic Cochin · Keralan Backwaters · Cardamom Hills · Tropical Beach Exceptionally beautiful and tranquil, the south Indian state of Kerala is characterised by meandering rivers, rice fields, spice plantations, verdant hills and palm-fringed beaches. This gently paced tour takes in the most captivating areas including the charming port city of Cochin and the lush backwaters, which can be explored by boat to provide a wonderful glimpse into rural village life.
Church, dating back to 1503. Continue to the Mattancherry Palace, a gift from the Portuguese to the Raja of Cochin in 1515. Optional evening excursion to watch a Kathakali dance performance (payable locally). (B) Day 4 To Thekkady: Morning drive through the Western Ghats to Thekkady, a beautiful area of tea gardens, rubber estates and coffee and pepper plantations located high in the Cardamom Hills. Stay overnight at the Cardamom County or similar. (B) Day 5 To Kumarakom: After breakfast, visit a spice garden where you will be introduced to different spices and shown how some of the spices are grown. Continue to Kumarakom, situated on the backwaters, and stay for 2 nights at Kumarakom Lake Resort / Coconut Lagoon. Evening sunset boat trip on the waters of Lake Vembanad. (B) Day 6 Backwater cruise: Drive to Alleppey for a motorboat cruise through the narrow canals and inland waterways, seeing rural life unchanged for centuries. (B) Day 7 To Kovalam: Drive to the coastal resort of Kovalam and stay for 2 nights at Travancore Heritage. (B) Day 8 Kovalam: At leisure. (B)
Day 10 London: Morning arrival. (N) Day 1 To Cochin: Fly from London to Cochin, via Bahrain, with Gulf Air. (N) Day 2 Cochin: Morning arrival in Cochin, the historic centre of India's spice trade. Transfer to Le Meridien for stay of 3 nights including immediate occupancy. Afternoon cruise around Cochin harbour. (N) Day 3 Cochin: Morning tour of Cochin including Jewtown, the Chinese fishing nets and St Francis Private Journeys: In addition to the Escorted Group departures, this itinerary may be taken at any time as a Private Journey, subject to availability, and the prices for this option are shown on the price table.
