Starting from Colombo, the tour takes in Pinnewala elephant orphanage, the rock fortress at Sigiriya and the beautiful hill station of Kandy, before continuing to the picturesque tea country and the Horton Plains. The journey ends with a relaxing three night stay on one of Sri Lanka's tropical beaches.
Kandy
Day 1 To Colombo: Overnight flight from London to Colombo, via Dubai, with Emirates. (N) Day 2 Colombo: Morning arrival and transfer to the Galle Face Hotel for 1 night. (N) Day 3 To Kandalama: Morning transfer to Kandalama, stopping at the Pinnewala elephant orphanage en route. Stay for 3 nights at the charming Vil Uyana. (B) Day 4 Anuradhapura: Morning drive to the ancient city of Anuradhapura, founded in the 4th century BC. This was the capital of Sri Lanka for 1,400 years, and it contains fabulous Buddhist shrines and relics. Afternoon visit to Mihintale, where Buddhism originated in Sri Lanka. (B)

Day 5 Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa: Morning visit to the rock fortress town of Sigiriya. Continue to the 11th century medieval capital of Polonnaruwa, site of several magnificent carved Buddhas. (B) Day 6 To Dambulla & Kandy: Morning transfer to Kandy, stopping at Dambulla en route to visit the rock caves. Continue to the beautiful hill station of Kandy and stay 2 nights at the Kandy House. Evening cultural performance and visit to the Temple of the Tooth. (B, L, D) Day 7 Kandy: Kandy is set on the shores of a beautifully designed artificial lake, and the area abounds with rich and varied plant life. Morning visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens. Afternoon at leisure. (B, L, D)

Day 8 Tea Trails: Morning drive to Tea Trails, stopping en route at a tea plantation. Stay 2 nights at Tea Trails (Norwood Bungalow). (B, L, D) Day 9 Horton Plains: Early morning visit to Horton Plains, situated on Sri Lanka's highest plateau (this excursion involves a 2 1/2 hour walk). Now part of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, Horton Plains is home to large populations of monkey and sambar. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B, L, D) Day 10 To Bentota: Drive to Bentota and stay at the stunning Saman Villas for 3 nights. (B) Day 11 Bentota: At leisure. (B) Day 12 Bentota: At leisure.
