Civilisations of Peru DISCOVERY TOUR 17 Days / 15 Nights from £3,450 Private Journey · Off the Beaten Track Peru · Peru Before and After the Incas Renowned for the remarkable legacy of the Incas, Peru was in fact home to countless ancient civilisations. Venturing off the tourist trail, this tour takes in the ruins of Peru's ancient cities. In northern Peru visit Kuelap, an amazing feat of construction high in the mountains. See the ancient Chimu city of Chan Chan and the colonial cities of Trujillo and Cajamarca, with their wealth of history, before travelling to Cuzco and Machu Picchu. SOUTH AMERICA 21 Day 1 To Lima: Fly to Lima, via Madrid, with Iberia. Transfer to the Melia Lima for 1 night. (N) Day 2 To Trujillo: Morning tour of historic Lima with lunch at Casa Moreyra. Fly to Trujillo, one of the oldest cities in the Americas with a wealth of Spanish colonial history. Stay at the Hotel Libertador for 2 nights. (B, L) Day 3 Trujillo: Take a morning tour of the city and the archaeological museum. This afternoon, visit the splendid Moche Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, and Chan Chan, once the largest adobe city in the world. (B, L) Day 4 To Chiclayo: Visit the Royal Tombs of Sipan, with their priceless collections of ancient art, artefacts and gold, and the Calac city of Tucume. Continue by road to Chiclayo for 2 nights at the Gran Hotel. (B, L) Day 5 Chiclayo: Half day tour of Chiclayo, renowned for its arts, and visit the witches market. (B) Day 6 To Chachapoyas: Long day's drive into the mountains, to the cloud forest of Chachapoyas. Founded in 1538, Chacapoyas had a culture that fiercely rivalled the Incas. Stay overnight at the Hostal El Chillo. (B, L) Day 7 Kuelap: Take a full day tour of Kuelap, an impressive fortress that sprawls more than 1km on a mountain ridge and contains three times more material than the Egyptian pyramids. Continue to Leymebamba and stay 1 night at Centro Mallqui. (B, L, D) found at Laguna de Los Condores. Continue to Cajamarca, where the Inca Empire met its fate. Stay 2 nights at the Laguna Seca Hotel, set in lovely gardens with a spa and natural hot springs. (B, L) Day 9 Cajamarca: Morning tour of colonial Cajamarca, which had a colourful history in the times of the conquest, and visit the impressive engineering feat of the Inca Baths. (B) Day 10 To Cuzco: Fly south to Cuzco via Lima and stay 2 nights at the Casa Andina Private Collection. (B) Day 11 Cuzco: Tour of Cuzco and the nearby Inca ruins, including Sacsayhuaman. (B) Day 12 To the Sacred Valley: Visit Pisac or Chinchero market and Ollantaytambo fortress. Stay 1 night in the Sacred Valley at the Casa Andina Private Collection. (B) Day 13 To Machu Picchu: Take the train to Machu Picchu and take a morning tour of the ruins, with the afternoon at leisure at the citadel. Stay overnight at Inkaterra Machu Picchu.
