It offers a great variety of sights in a small area, from high peaks and volcanoes to bustling colonial towns and markets. It also includes the unique wildlife habitat of the Galapagos Islands. Take the Chiva Express train past spectacular volcanoes and through the Devil's Nose pass, stopping in traditional Andean villages en route. Mansion Alcazar. (B, L, D) Day 5 Cuenca: Full day tour of Cuenca, Ecuador's beautiful and busy southern colonial city. (B, L) Day 6 Around Cuenca & To Guayaquil: Morning trip through the Santa Ana Valley, stopping at small artisan towns, which make gold and silver jewellery and Ikat weavings on ancient looms. Visit lush orchid gardens and return to Cuenca along the banks of the Santa Barbara river. Fly to Guayaquil and stay overnight at the Hotel Hilton Colon. (B, L) Day 7 To Galapagos Islands: Fly to the Galapagos Islands and board the M/V Santa Cruz for a 3-night cruise of the fascinating and spectacular western islands. (B, L, D) Days 8-9 Galapagos Islands: Shared island excursions with a naturalist guide to Espanola, Floreana, Fernandina and Isabela islands. (B, L, D)

Day 1 To Quito: Fly to Quito via Miami with British Airways / American Airlines, or via Houston with Continental Airlines. Stay 2 nights at the Patio Andaluz in the old town. (N) Day 2 Quito: Morning tour of Quito, including a visit to `The Middle of the World' or a cable car ride up Pichincha Volcano. (B) Day 3 To Riobamba: Travel on the Chiva Express through the spectacular `Avenue of the Volcanoes' to the slopes of Cotopaxi Volcano, stopping at a working hacienda and a rose plantation. Continue

by road past charming small towns and spectacular landscapes to historic Riobamba, set in the heart of the Andes. Stay overnight at the Hacienda Abraspungu. (B, L, D) Day 4 Devil's Nose to Cuenca: This morning, take the Chiva Express from Riobamba and stop at the Indian village of Guamote. Continue to the Devil's Nose switchbacks. One of the most impressive feats of rail engineering in the world, the track twists and turns through cuttings and river gorges. Continue by road to the Inca ruins of Ingapirca, and arrive in Cuenca in the evening. Stay 2 nights at
Day 10 To Quito: Disembark the cruise and fly to Quito. Stay 2 nights at the Patio Andaluz. (B) Day 11 Otavalo: Full day tour to the countryside north of Quito, including Lake San Pablo and the surrounding villages. Take lunch at one of Ecuador's historic haciendas. (B, L) Day 12 To London: Fly to London via Miami with American Airlines / British Airways or via Houston with Continental. (B) Day 13 London: Morning arrival. (N) Note: Due to departure dates for the Santa Cruz and the Chiva Express, this tour departs on a Saturday from the UK.
