This tour explores the contrasting corners of Brazil, including glamorous Rio and the Amazon jungle, the historic towns of Salvador and Ouro Preto and the thrilling Iguaçu Falls. (B) Day 6 To Amazon Eco Park: Travel up the Amazon to the Meeting of the Waters, where the waters of the Rio Negro meet the light waters of the Solimoes River and flow side by side without mixing for several miles. Arrive at the Amazon Eco Park Lodge for a 2 night stay. Evening alligator spotting. (B, D) Day 7 Amazon: Morning walk to see the Amazonian flora and fauna, and take in the early morning sights and sounds of the rainforest. Afternoon visit to a native Caboclo house and piranha fishing. (B, L, D) Day 8 To Salvador: Morning jungle excursion. Depart downriver to Manaus and fly to Salvador, the colourful capital of Bahia and a former capital of Brazil. Stay 3 nights in the old town at Hotel Solar do Carmo. (B) Day 9 Salvador: Morning tour of historic Salvador, including the Pelourinho area and San Francisco church. Evening Bahian dinner and introduction to Candomble and Maculele dance, the martial art Capoeira, and other African-influenced Brazilian art forms at Solar do União. (B, D) Day 10 Salvador Bay: Take a full day schooner cruise around some of the 36 islands dotted around the bay, with time to soak up the sun and swim in the warm waters. (B, L) Day 11 To Ouro Preto: Fly to Belo Horizonte and drive through rolling hillside scenery to Ouro Preto, a wonderfully preserved 18th century colonial town. Stay 2 nights at the Pousada Mondego. (B) Day 12 Ouro Preto: Ouro Preto has a rich history: it was the focal point of the gold and silver rush that hit this area in the early 18th century, and later the centre for the Brazilian independence movement. Take a walking tour of the town, visiting its immaculately preserved baroque churches and the Mineralogy Museum, and enjoy a local lunch. (B, L) Day 13 To Iguaçu: Drive to Belo Horizonte and fly to Iguaçu via Sao Paulo. The thundering waters of Iguaçu are an amazing spectacle, surrounded by tropical rainforest and stretching for many miles. Tour the Brazilian side of the falls. Stay 2 nights at the Hotel Tropical das Cataratas / Hotel Bourbon (B) Day 14 Iguazú: Morning excursion to the Argentinian side of the falls and the Devil's Throat, to get a perspective from above. Afternoon speedboat trip on the river below the falls. (B) Day 15 To London: Afternoon flight to Sao Paulo and on to London with TAM Brazilian Airlines. (B) Day 16 London: Afternoon arrival.
