In this unpolluted environment in the South Atlantic, with clear blue skies, seamless horizons, vast open spaces and pristine beaches, visitors can encounter many species of penguin as well as elephant seal, a host of Antarctic and southern ocean bird life and perhaps even whales. Reached by air from Santiago and Punta Arenas in Chile with LAN airlines, the Falkland Islands are visited in a 7-night itinerary, to coincide with LAN's timetable. It can be visited as an extension to Chile or other parts of South America, or on its own with flights from London via Madrid. It is also possible to fly direct on a charter flight from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. The following itinerary takes in the best of the wildlife, scenery and history of the Falklands, and some of the best places to stay. Accommodation is in small hotels, lodges and farms, and travel is by land and small aircraft with the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS). Day 1 To Falklands: Fly from Santiago or Punta Arenas in Chile to Mount Pleasant on the Falkland Islands with LAN, arriving early afternoon. views over Choiseul Sound, and its setting is ideal for spotting wildlife, including night heron, ruddy headed and upland goose and blackish oystercatcher. (D) Day 2 To Pebble Island: Fly to Pebble Island with FIGAS. This low level flight provides excellent views of the coastline. Pebble Island is one of the larger outlying islands, and one of the world's best places to see rockhopper, gentoo and magellanic penguin, along with southern sea lion. Stay 2 nights at Pebble Lodge, the converted farm manager's house. (B, L, D) Day 3 Pebble Island: Excursions around Pebble Island by 4 x 4 jeep. The spectacular rugged scenery is home to abundant wildfowl and wading birdlife, including Chiloe wigeon, grebe and black-necked swan, as well as various penguin species. the most southerly inhabited of the Falkland archipelago, for 2 nights at the Sea Lion Lodge. The scenery here is amazingly unspoilt, and the wildlife abundant. Huge elephant seals bask on the white sand beach and are close enough to be seen from the lodge bar. (B, L, D) Day 5 Sea Lion Island: Self guided walks around Sea Lion Island, with maps and wildlife viewing tips provided by the lodge. Wildlife includes the endangered striated caracara, Antarctic skua, southern giant petrel and many southern sea lions. (B, L, D) Day 6 To Stanley: Fly to the Falklands capital, Stanley. Take a tour of this small and remote city, including the museum and Gypsy Cove. Stay 2 nights at Malvina House Hotel. (B) Day 7 Volunteer Point: Full day excursion to Volunteer Point. The beach has a tropical feel, with white sand and turquoise waters. A highlight here is the colonies of king penguin, the second largest penguin species, close in size to the emperor penguin.
