This cruise passes through the stunning engineering feat of the Panama Canal and continues to the pristine Darién Jungle, travelling along the beautiful Costa Rican coastline and through areas rich in wildlife, culture and buccaneering history. The Pacific Explorer is a small expedition cruise ship. It is 185 metres in length and can accommodate 100 passengers. It offers a relaxed atmosphere and comfortable cabins with air-conditioning and private bathrooms. On-board facilities include a dining room serving international cuisine, a bar, sun deck, lounge and lobby. First-class guides accompany the shore excursions.
Day 8 Golfo Dulce: Visit a mangrove forest and a 90-acre botanical garden. Take in the orchid house, fruit trees, colourful butterflies and hummingbirds. (B, L, D) Day 9 Caletas Beach: Discover Costa Rica's pristine coastal rainforest, a habitat for abundant bird life including scarlet macaws as well as monkeys, crocodiles, marine turtles and other wildlife. (B, L, D) Day 10 Manuel Antonio National Park: Explore this tropical lowland forest, surrounded by a magnificent white beach and home to hundreds of plant and animal species, including the rare white ibis. (B, L, D) Day 5 Panama Canal: Cross a continent in a day, and sail through the huge Panama Canal. (B, L, D) Day 6 Darién Jungle: Travel up the Sambu River to visit La Chunga, a small Emberá village. Ibis, egret, heron and blue-headed parrot live along the river, one of the world's best bird-watching areas. (B, L, D) Day 7 Isla de Coiba: Spend a day at Granita de Oro in the Coiba National Park. This island is home to a wealth of sea life including 15 species of coral. Spend the day bird watching, kayaking, snorkelling and relaxing. (B, L, D) Day 11 To London: Disembark the ship and transfer to San Jose. Fly to London, via Miami, with American Airlines and British Airways. (B) Day 12 London: Morning arrival. (N) Note: This tour can also be taken from Costa Rica to Panama (dates are marked with an * below). These departures include an overnight stay in San Jose at the Melia Cariari Hotel, and no overnight stay in Panama City. Day 1 To Panama City: Fly to Panama City via Miami with British Airways and American Airlines. Transfer to the Intercontinental Hotel for 1 night. (N) Day 2 Panama: Transfer to Colon on the Caribbean coast. This afternoon, board the Pacific Explorer for 9 nights. (B, D) Day 3 San Blas Islands: Explore the palm-fringed San Blas Islands, home to the Kuna Indians.
