Tourists seldom visit Eastern India and certainly the lands of Orissa, Darjeeling and Sikkim give us a perfect excuse to sing the praises of overland travel. Here we can leave the tourist trail and head into the tribal lands and the mountains to remote temples and Bonda tribal markets. Local people feature heavily if you want to meet a lot of Indians, check out Calcutta. It's the most Indian of all Indian cities, Bengal at its best. Further south our journeys are slower, laid back and definitely put the holiday into the adventure holiday. You don't get much more relaxed than Goa and the beaches of the south.
