The `Cathedral in the Desert', Lake Powell
An exciting and unique guided canoe expedition, deep into the Canadian wilderness Yukon is a vast wilderness of mountains, lakes and forests. The summers are short and bright (it never really gets dark) but the days are long and warm. We fly to Whitehorse, and start the canoe trip on the Yukon River with the compass needle set north. From the excellent vantage point of our canoes on the mighty Yukon River, we have great opportunities to spot black bears, moose and bald eagles nesting over the riverbanks. We camp in breathtaking and isolated locations before returning to civilisation at the gold-rush town of Dawson. Profile: travel is by canoe covering 400 kilometres of the Yukon River. Special canoeing skills are not needed and beginners are welcome, although a good level of fitness is required. Grade: challenging. Group: min. 6, max. 11, plus leader. Min. age 16. Accommodation: 4 nights hotels, 9 nights camping. Food: all camping meals included.
Explore by kayak the dramatic, convoluted shoreline of this flooded canyon from our comfortable beach camp Lake Powell, created with the Glen Canyon Dam in 1966, is one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the USA. Almost 300km long, it twists and turns along tightly carved canyons and valleys amongst the spectacular red rock for which this region is famous. Starting and finishing with nights in Las Vegas, we head out onto the lake and camp on a remote beach a small houseboat supports the group with creature comforts - cold drinks and great food! From this base we explore the lake's remarkable geology and fascinating Native American history, whilst revelling in the solitude and splendour of the scenery.

Itinerary: Day 1 Fly to Whitehorse. 2 Drive via Klondike Highway to Carmacks; start the canoe trip. 3/10 Canoe over 400 kilometres exploring the vast hinterland of the Yukon. 11/12 Arrive Dawson City, historic gold town and home to many legends. Visit the Jack London and Robert Service cabins, theatre and Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall. A highlight is the drive into Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks where we visit an active gold mine. 13 Drive via Klondike Highway back to Whitehorse. 14 Depart. 15 Arrive London.

Itinerary: Day 1 Fly to Las Vegas. 2 Drive to Lake Powell, camp at the quiet marina. 3 To isolated beach camp, learning about our kayaks and surroundings on the way. 4/6 Explore the lake by kayak, with hikes from the shores to scenic and historic spots. 7 Return to marina; drive to Las Vegas. 8 Depart. 9 Arrive London. Profile: semi-participatory camping trip in kayaks with beginners welcome. Travel by minibus, boat and kayak. Grade: moderate. Group: min. 6, max. 10, plus leader/driver. Min. age 16.
