Frequently Asked Questions "I liked riding on the elephant because I'd never been on one before. I also liked walking up the mountain and seeing the children at the top. My brother Mathew said our holiday was the best thing he's ever done, ever. When can we go to Thailand again?" Christopher Mannings, aged 6, Bath Where do you stay? We use a range of hotels from 2 to 4 star. When choosing a hotel for our family itineraries we consider the following: location, cleanliness, character, safety, en suite facilities, value for money, friendly service and whether they are locally-owned properties. You can be assured that the vast majority of hotels that we use are charming smaller establishments, where the management take an active interest in the welfare of their customers. They will be places that welcome you in and then set you at ease with their friendliness. Except in the most remote areas, they will come with the services and amenities that the 21st century family need. Wherever possible, we also choose hotels that have swimming pools as we realise this is a great way to keep children happy. Please see individual trip pages for details of access to swimming pools. On some trips, we also enjoy the adventurous and downright irresistible options: camping out in Wadi Rum, a luxury bush camp in the Masai Mara, a mountain gite in the Atlas Mountains, a Bedouin camp in Egypt, a village house in northern Thailand or a jungle lodge in Peru. For some of these options, facilities may be a little lacking but cleanliness and sanitation will not be and these are often the most memorable nights of a trip. Sometimes there is no substitute for camping to enhance the wilderness experience and it need not be arduous or uncomfortable. Our Activity Centres are based on small to medium sized, family-friendly, mid-ranged hotels that we have selected for their location. Following our overall philosophy, it is not where you stay on holiday it is what you can do that counts. How are these holidays tailored to families? We have deliberately tried to ensure that the pace of these tours is suitable for families. This means arranging a day to relax after a long international flight, reducing travel times where we can and ensuring at least 2 nights in most of the places that we stay. We balance the level of accommodation, so if you do have a night of basic facilities, you may find yourself in a good quality hotel the next night. All families are different, and different family members enjoy (and dislike!) different things. We recognise this and time is given on all holidays for personal exploration and relaxation and we have built in as much flexibility as possible. However, we recommend you consider how much space and choice you require as a family before deciding on whether a group tour, independent trip or activity centre is most suitable for your needs. How do you get there? Flights and families sometimes don't mix. Jet lag, flight transfers, missed sleep and cramped planes can be stressful enough for adults, but with children as well... We choose our airlines and flight times carefully and where possible use direct flights with airlines that have reasonable in-flight service and entertainment. Unfortunately the ideal flight just does not exist to certain destinations, or if it does it is considerably more expensive. In these cases we choose the best available compromise. We know that sometimes it is more convenient for you to make your own travel arrangements and join the group at your destination. As such we have designated certain holidays as `Land Only' and the price in the brochure is without international flights. This provides the following benefits to you: · Convenience Certain airlines operate from regional airports that may be closer to home · Value You can shop around and choose a low-cost airline, for example · Avoid Flying Perhaps you would rather reach your destination by road or rail? This is increasingly regarded as a more environmentally responsible option. What do you eat? In many of our destinations there will be a wide range of food available from standard Western diets to the full exotic local cuisine of spices, strange seafood and never-seen-before vegetables and fruit. For many this is a chance to experiment and test out the taste buds. However if your children, or you, prefer a less adventurous diet, there will always be enough to eat, although it may lack a little in variety in some destinations. 10 To book call 0845 863 9636 or visit www.exodus.co.uk
