Understanding your needs
Many of the holidays in this brochure are adventurous; all are active and some demanding, so we want to ensure that you are fully aware of what is involved. We recognise that most parents face the age-old dilemma of wanting to encourage their children to explore and experience new places and to participate in new things as part of learning about the world they live in, but also want to ensure that they are safe and happy whilst doing so. We believe that travel broadens the mind and helps develop cultural awareness and understanding. However, any travel and many activities have risks attached and we feel it is important to point these out to you before you decide to book. Different cultures are exactly that: different. This means that you and your children will come across strange customs and food. Many destination cities can be noisy and crowded, and you may end up as the centre of attention. Adults often find this difficult and call it culture shock. Children, as they are more attuned to learning about the world often react well, but occasionally this can cause them distress and discomfort.
Reality Check
All the holidays have full descriptions of any activities involved with a stated minimum age, but you should consider how active your children are at home, whether they regard activity as fun and how they react to being tired. Whereas a tired adult can normally understand that it is only another half hour walk back to the hotel and then they can rest; children can find this more difficult. In many of the countries where we operate, the standards of hygiene, accommodation and transport are simply not as good as they are in the EU or other Western countries. Although safety is paramount to us, simply by travelling to certain destinations or exploring off-the-beaten-track means that much of what we take for granted at home is just not available. Clean drinking water and spotlessly clean bathrooms, state of the art motor vehicles and good roads or sprinkler systems and smoke alarms can simply be much harder, or impossible, to find.
How do you get around?
The huge majority of transport that we use is private. However, on some occasions, we choose to use local public transport as it is a good means of meeting the people and adds to the overall experience. The method of transport used varies according to the terrain but what is guaranteed is that you can travel in some fun and unusual ways. Consider the following as an idea of what you can do: dogsledding, sea kayaking, diving, skidooing, rafting, hiking, bush walking, snowshoeing, riding a camel, elephant or horse, cruising, game viewing, or cycling.
Participative Fun
These holidays are designed to be fun, exciting and hopefully educational for families, but you need to be responsible for your own children. Our leaders and local staff are there to guide, help and advise and ensure that the holiday runs properly and professionally; but they are not qualified child minders and you should not put them or other group members in a position where they are responsible for your own children. We believe that it all comes down to attitude. No holiday is without risks whether they are physical, like a dose of traveller's tummy, or mental, such as culture shock or simply not enjoying what you are doing. Pick the right holiday for you, prepare properly and go with the right attitude and we are sure that you will have a holiday that will excite, challenge and entertain the whole family and one from which you will have many stories to tell. Please see page 67 for more advice on the health and safety of you and your family.
How can you find out more?
For every holiday in this brochure you can request detailed Trip Notes. These contain a lot more background information than we can put in the brochure including a more detailed itinerary, trip profile, weather and technical details such as visas and vaccinations. We strongly recommend that you read the Trip Notes before booking - they are available online at www.exodus.co.uk or we can post them to you. The Trip Notes also act as the final definitive statement of inclusions and other details, and forms an essential part of our booking contract with you.
When should you book?
We recommend that you book your holiday as far in advance as possible. This is not for our benefit but for yours, as travelling with your family normally means travelling during peak season. Flight and hotel availability can be much more limited than at other times of the year.
