he mountains of the Picos de Europa Spain's first National Park offer some of the finest, most dramatic mountain scenery in the country, with lush valleys, deep rocky gorges, and fascinating cave systems. Add in the proximity of the stunning Cantabrian Coast, and this area provides the perfect location for a family-orientated activity holiday. Once again, we have teamed up with long-time Exodus partner, and local activity guru, Jim Thomson and his partner Pilar.
The Centres
We use two different hotels in the lovely mountain village of Arenas de Cabrales.
Hotel Torrecerredo
Our first choice is the Torrecerredo, a familyrun hotel, situated in quiet meadows a few hundred metres from the edge of the village. It has a pleasant garden terrace, and all rooms have en suite facilities.
Villa de Cabrales
Where necessary, we also use the Villa de Cabrales, located in the village of Arenas (just 4 minutes walk from the Torrecerredo). This comfortable 2 star hotel is built of local stone, has 26 rooms, all en suite, and has been tastefully refurbished.
TRIP TRIVIA
Picos de Europa harbours 130 pairs of Griffon Vultures and although one of the heaviest birds in the sky, they usually fly at 1500m (4500ft). One even collided with an aircraft flying at 11,270 metres (37,000ft) - the highest altitude any bird has been identified at.
