The most dramatic high altitude trek in the Andes amongst the mountains made famous by Joe Simpson in `Touching the Void' The trek around the Huayhuash Range (pronounced why-wash!) is one of the world's most spectacular mountain circuits. It is a trek for the true walking enthusiast and its physical demands are rewarded with a mountain splendour with few equals. Although a small range, it is richly glaciated, steep and dramatic, as well as being home to Peru's second highest peak, Yerupaja, at 6634m. With its bright turquoise glacial lakes and stunning hanging glaciers, the Huayhuash is, perhaps, the most magnificent of all the Peruvian Andes. Profile: 14 days point-to-point walking with full porterage. Altitude maximum 5030m, average 4200m. Grade C. Group: min. 7, max. 16, plus leader and appropriate local staff. Min. age 18. A two-part trek with the finest views of the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash ranges In northern Peru lies the highest concentration of snow-capped peaks in the whole of the Andes. The Cordillera Blanca, the `White Range', is the highest equatorial mountain range in the world, its snowy nevados providing fantastic alpine panoramas, including Peru's highest mountain, Huascaran (6798m). The Cordillera Huayhuash lies a little further south and has been made famous by Joe Simpson's book and the film `Touching the Void'. We trek among the richly glaciated mountains in both these ranges and climb through beautiful sub-tropical valleys right up to the snow beside the peaks, while enjoying unparalleled mountain views. impressive views of Yerupaja and Rondoy. 11 Over Rondoy Pass. 12 Visit glacier below Yerupaja; on to Lake Jahuacocha. 13 Over Llamac Pass into village of Llamac. 14 Full day drive to Lima via Chiquian. 15 Free day to relax. Itinerary: Day 1 Fly to Lima. 2 Drive to Huaraz. 3 Half day acclimatisation hike at Lake Churup. 4 Drive to Chiquian with a visit to alapaca textile factory. Overnight in hostel. 5/6 Through foothills to cross Continental Divide and reach first big peaks. 7 Rest day at Carhuacocha. 8/12 Spectacular trekking past highest peaks and passes to reach Sarapococha Valley. 13 Rest day to explore `Joe Simpson's Base Camp', near the foot of Siula Grande. 14/16 Continue over two more passes to reach viewpoint at Punta Yaucha. 17 Rest day at Lake Jahuacocha.18 Walk out from Jahuacocha to Rondoy. 19 Return to Huaraz. 20 To Lima. 21 Depart. 22 Arrive London.

Itinerary: Day 1 Fly to Lima. 2 Follow Panamerican Highway north to Huaraz. 3 Spectacular drive into Huascaran N.P. and past turquoise Llanganuco lakes to Vaqueria. Trek to Paria. 4 Ascend towards Punta Union pass at 4700m. Amazing view down Santa Cruz Valley. 5 Walk down Santa Cruz Valley, with option to view Mt Alpamayo down side-valley. 6 Descend to Cashapampa and end of Cordillera Blanca section. Drive to Huaraz. 7 Drive to Chavin; Cordillera Huayhuash. 8 Follow the Vizcarra River route to La Union; visit Huanucopampa, an untouched Inca site. 9 Hike to Carhuacocha, a beautifully located lake below mountains of Jirishanca, Siula and Yerupaja. 10 Cross Mitucocha Pass (4750m) and drop into another cirque of the Huayhuash with
