Cuba for the active traveller - explore this beautiful Caribbean island on foot Exploration of the faded colonial splendour, romantic revolutionaries and soft sandy beaches of Cuba, is all best done on foot. Away from these obvious stereotypes of the island, there is a wealth of rural charm to be found and a genuine warmth of the local people to be discovered. We visit the heritage sites of Old Havana, Trinidad and Santiago de Cuba - where the first shots of the revolution were fired. We also hike to Fidel's jungle hideout and into three of the most mountainous areas of Cuba, spotting humming birds and listening for the distinctive sound of the Tocororo, the Cuban national bird. Plaza and El Morro Castle. Drive to Villa Pinares de Mayari. 12 Walk to El Guayabo waterfall - the highest and most beautiful in Cuba. 13 To Villa San Jose del Lago in Sancti Spiritus province. 14 Walking through Jatibonico's mountain range, with views of north coast. 15 To Santa Clara, site of Che Guevara's Mausoleum. A walking exploration of the nature and culture in Cuba's rural west Pinar del Rio, the most western province of Cuba, is largely unvisited, and so provides us with a real opportunity to observe the uncommercial quality of this island. We visit the Sierra Rosario and the national parks, which are a paradise for bird watching, while our walks also teach us about tropical plants and their uses. We gain an insight into life on the small private farms and work in the plantations. Between the walks, we sample the beaches of Cayo Levisa, where we are free to relax or snorkel (optional) over a variety of live corals and tropical fish. trail to Benito's house (tobacco farm). Itinerary: Day 1 Fly to Havana. 2 City tour of Havana, including Museum of Revolution and lunch at Hemingway's favourite bar. 3 Drive to Las Terrazas and walk El Contento trail to Banos de San Juan. 4 Walk Santa Serafina trail to disused coffee station at Buena Vista. 5 Drive to San Diego; walk to Hacienda Cortina. 6 Boat to Cayo Levisa; time for relaxation on beach or optional snorkelling. East to the Sierra del Escambray, Cuba's second-highest mountain range. 3/5 Walking in Topes de Collantes N.P., well-known for its birdlife. 6 To Trinidad, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Evening can be spent at Casa de la Trova, enjoying traditional Cuban music and dance! 7 To Sierra Maestra, Cuba's highest mountain range. 8 Walk to `La Comandancia' (Fidel's revolutionary headquarters). 9 Start Turquino peak trail, highest mountain in Cuba (1974m); stay in a mountain hut. 10 Reach the summit, crowned by the monument to Jose Marti, the Cuban national hero. Descend and drive to Santiago de Cuba. 11 Explore Santiago de Cuba; visit Moncada Barracks, Revolution
