120 The Americas I North America Grand Canyon North America WHICH REGION? Southwest: The scenery is so stunning that vast stretches have been preserved in the form of national parks and monuments. Much of the Southwest lies on the Colorado Plateau, a high sandstone desert which covers most of southern Utah and northern Arizona. In these landscapes are many of the West's natural wonders: the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon to name a few. Rockies: Have long been a magnet for serious trekkers with their superb scenery, wildlife, diversity of terrain and challenging hiking trails leading to magnificent peaks. Stretching from Canada to Mexico, they are the backbone of the North American continent. Yellowstone: The oldest national park in the world, founded in 1872. Most of the park sits in a huge dormant caldera at 2000-2500m. Yellowstone sits on top of a local hot spot, responsible for creating the largest concentration of geo-thermal features in the world. Sierra Nevada Mountains: A vast range, spanning almost the entire length of the state of California. Geologic forces have exposed large amounts of golden coloured granite that forms the most unusual peaks and cliffs. Most famous are Half Dome and El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park. WHY EXODUS?
