Highlights of the Bernese Oberland
Switzerland & France 8 days Grade: B
The classic High Level Route from Chamonix to Zermatt The Haute Route is one of Europe's best known long distance skitouring routes; running roughly parallel is a spectacular and demanding summer trek from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn. The route covers approximately 150km and travels west to east, linking the valleys of Haute Savoie in France to the Swiss Valais. We pass beneath ten of the twelve highest mountains in the Alps. Some of the terrain between the high passes is rugged and remote, scattered with glacial lakes and moraine. Europaweg, a high-level balcony path that contours along the valley towards Zermatt. 14 Optional trip to Zermatt. 15 To Geneva; fly to London. Profile: 10 days point-to-point walking with vehicle support (inc. 3 days light backpacking). Altitude maximum 2965m, average 1525m. Grade C. Group: min. 8, max. 16, plus leader. Min. age 18. Accommodation: camping, mostly in good campsites with hot showers; occasional rough camps; 2 mountain huts; 1 village inn (dormitory style). Food: all breakfasts, 10 picnic lunches and 12 dinners included.
The best of the Bernese Oberland in a week, all from a comfortable hotel Our traditional Swiss hotel in Wilderswil, on the outskirts of Interlaken, is an ideal location from which to explore this fantastic area. The village is situated at the confluence of the two valleys of Lauterbrunnen and Grindlewald, above which stand the majestic mountains of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. Using the excellent local transport system, which includes chair lift access to and from the start and finish of many of the walks, we'll explore the area. We visit spectacular locations such as Kleine Scheidegg below the awesome north face of the Eiger, and the alpine village of Murren, the highest in all of Switzerland. The area is blessed with scenic walks and viewpoints, glaciated peaks, lush green valleys, mountain lakes and beautiful Swiss villages, and is simply a must for all walkers.
