WHAT IS VIA FERRATA?
One of the greatest thrills an expert hiker can experience is to walk a Via Ferrata, literally the `Iron Way'. Essentially, via ferrate are high mountain routes built during the First World War to help troops defend their territory, most importantly when the Dolomites were the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary. Thanks to an extensive network of metal cables, rungs and ladders, every confident scrambler can enjoy reaching high passes and spectacular summits with no previous climbing experience. There is no better area to explore these `iron paths' than the incredible Dolomites, amid stunning limestone scenery and fascinating history. The Dolomites were reclaimed by the Italians after the war they only needed a head for heights and good fitness to reach the perfect defensive locations sometimes using avalanches as a weapon. A qualified mountain guide, who is experienced in Via Ferrata and very knowledgeable about the area, will lead each tour. All of the required equipment can be hired locally.
Via Ferrata: Northern Dolomites
Italy 8 days Grade: D
Spectacular scenery on this introduction to Via Ferrata based around the Tre Cime de Lavaredo The Sexten Dolomites are an extensive cluster of fine, craggy mountains occupying the northeastern corner of the Dolomites Massif: an area which includes many `jewels' such as the Tre Cime de Lavaredo. This is considered one of the best parts of this vast mountain range, thanks to its stunning landscapes. Although popular with rock climbers, the area boasts an excellent selection of protected Via Ferrata scrambles, such as Toblinger Knoten. Fortifications were placed on strategic cols and summits during the First World War, which can be reached via iron ladders, bridges and even tunnels through rock. To accompany the superb walks, at our hotel we enjoy traditional Tyrolean hospitality and a wonderful mix of Italian and Austrian cuisine.
