Europe I France 34 Walking in Burgundy France 8 days Grade: B Walking in Provence France 8 days Grade: B A week of daywalks amongst the famous vineyards, historic towns and picturesque villages of Burgundy The majestic region of Burgundy lies in central France, midway between the plains of the north and the Rhone valley to the south. It is, of course, most famous for its gastronomic flair and wine production, with the vineyards and winemaking tradition an important aspect of the local heritage. Alongside these delights there is plenty more to tempt visitors, and the rolling hills and forests of beech and oak offer a wealth of potential for walkers. Burgundy's greatest period was during the 15th century and ancient abbeys, impressive chateaux and pretty villages are scattered throughout the countryside, offering delightful scenery throughout the week. Highlights include a guided visit of the Chateau Commarin and winetasting in Meursault. optional visit to the famous Hotel Dieu. 5 Transfer to the village of Chateauneuf-en-Auxois; walk up the hill to Chateauneuf; if anyone would prefer not to walk, they can go in the minibus and enjoy a free afternoon exploring this beautiful village. 6 Loop through the woods to the village of Commarin. Guided visit to the chateau. 7 Relaxing walk along and around the Canal de Bourgogne. 8 End Dijon. Profile: 6 days centre-based walking. Altitude maximum 500m. Grade B. Group: min. 2, max. 15, plus tour leader. Min. age 16. Accommodation: 7 nights hotels. Food: all breakfasts, 4 picnic lunches and 7 dinners included. Explore on foot the villages and landscapes of the Luberon and the Vaucluse To the east of Avignon, limestone hills scented with rosemary and thyme descend to slopes cultivated with lavender, olives and vines. The villages in these hills are a delight with famous names, including Gordes, Roussillon and Fontaine de Vaucluse. Our centre is the pretty town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, 23km east of Avignon. Here the river Sorgue divides briefly around the island on which this charming town stands, making it the Venice of Provence. The town orginally made its fortune from a mediaeval cloth industry but is today best known for its numerous antique shops and market. During our week here we walk between the pretty villages of Provence, admiring their pastel shaded houses, red-tiled roofs, warm stone walls and now and then stopping at a café for a drink. We combine well known highlights with less known villages such as Saumane de Vaucluse, La Roque sur Pernes and Le Beaucef.
