Europe I Spain Alpujarras & the Four Sierras Spain 8 days Grade: B/C Walking in Andalucia Spain 8 days Grade: A/B A unique hut-to-hut trek through some of Andalucia's most picturesque scenery and remote white villages The Alpujarras is not a mountain range but an area, bounded to the south by the gentle Sierra de la Contraviesa, to the north by the mighty Sierra Nevada, and at the western end lie the rugged limestone Sierra de los Guajares and the spectacular Chaparral. This trek boasts an enormous variety of scenery including rocky meadows and deciduous woodland, ideal for the cooler weather of spring and autumn. In one sierra we may see `cabra montes' (wild mountain goats), whilst on another we can spot soaring eagles. Along with the abundance of bird life and butterflies, there is a myriad of native plants in spring, which change in each geological area. Late autumn is also exciting with the dazzling blaze of foliage and a bounty of exotic fruit that we sample on our walks. We stay in authentic private houses in small white villages and on a working farm, where traditional mountain life continues. Profile: 6 days walking with vehicle support. Altitude maximum 1750m, average1000m. Grade B/C. Group: min. 4, max. 11, plus leader. Min. age 18. Accommodation: 7 nights village houses/pensions and farmhouse. Food: all breakfasts, 6 picnic lunches and 6 evening meals with a reasonable amount of local wine included. Walking through the olive groves and rugged hills of Andalucia, with a day in Seville Andalucia, Spain's largest province, is only a few miles from Morocco and harbours many characteristics from its Moorish history. Rolling plains planted with sunflowers, olives and wheat stretch to the distant mountains and beyond the southern sierras, while long fertile valleys add to the varied scenery. Based near Algamitas, Cortijo Rosario boasts incredible views and sits in the heart of an agricultural community where life goes on much as it has for generations. Our walks take us to white villages and the granite peaks of Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Profile: 5 days centre-based walking. Grade A/B. Group: min. 2, max. 15, plus leader, driver and local staff. Min. age 16. Accommodation: 7 nights Cortijo Rosario. Food: all breakfasts, 5 packed lunches and 7 dinners included.
