YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
We always endeavour to provide detailed holiday information, both within this brochure and in our Trip Notes, to help you find a suitable holiday. As a broad starting point, we have also addressed some common queries below.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT HOLIDAY FOR YOU
I love the look of these new activities, but I still enjoy a bit of downhill skiing. Finnish Wilderness Week Flexi Acitivity: Finnish Lapland Mont Blanc Winter Activity Week Slovenia Winter Multi Activity Slovenia Snowshoe Snowshoeing in the Dolomites (p 21) (p 22) (p 24) (p 27) (p 35) (p 38) Chamonix Snowshoe (p 39) Dobbiaco (p 44) Learn to Skate at Versciaco (p 46) Seefeld Plateau (p 50) Triglav National Park (p 52) Sjusjoen (p 54)
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to be experienced? Many of our holidays are aimed at beginners and all necessary instruction is included. Snowshoeing, dogsledding and snowmobiling are easy to pick-up and require no previous experience. Cross-country skiing will involve more intensive instruction, and our groups are carefully graded to ensure participants have similar levels of experience. Do I need any special equipment? Except where specified, all technical equipment is included in the price, including cross-country skis, snowshoes, etc. You will need your own outdoor winter clothing, but in Arctic Scandinavia, where temperatures are often below -15ēC, you will be given thermal arctic overalls and insulated boots where necessary. See Trip Notes for full details. What if there is no snow? We have taken care to select locations and dates that have good snow reliability in normal winters. If snow conditions are poor we will do our best to transport you to areas with better snow. In some cases we may need to arrange an alternative package of activities, and if these activities cost more than those planned, you may be asked to pay the difference. Do I have to be super fit? No, most of our holidays are designed for people of just average fitness. Each holiday is graded. Of course some are tougher than others and the activity profile section gives more detail about what to expect. Please see the grading system explanation on pages 8 and 40-41. What if I fancy a day off, or doing something different? Most of our holidays involve a week's stay at a hotel with included activities, so if at any stage you want to have a day off, it is easy to opt out. If you want to try any alternative activities, these can often be arranged locally at extra cost.
Do I want to stay in a lively but traditional village or on a remote mountainside? It's worth thinking about what you like to do in the evenings. Most of our holidays in Scandinavia are in Wilderness locations, where evening entertainment is home-grown. The best locations for access to some low key nightlife are: Seefeld in Austria, Villabassa in the Dolomites, Slovenia and the Iceland Weekends. I always insist on good quality accommodation where can I expect this? If this is you, then avoid the following holidays, as we use basic wilderness style cabins or hostel-style accommodation with limited facilities: Lapland Adventure and the Icehotel, Arctic Circle Dogsled Expedition, the Fjellhiem at Sjusjoen, and the bunk rooms at Kvitavatn. Our best accommodation is at: Hotel Adler in the Dolomites, Hotel Kalevala in Finland, Hotel Kristall in Pertisau and the cosy Kamben in Norway. What else is there to do, other than my chosen activity? Even on the single activity weeks we offer a number of other options for the evenings or free day, for example: hot-tubs, dogsledding trips, downhill options and torchlight sledging. Refer to the `Optional activities' section on the trip page for a list of what's possible in the area. Otherwise try one of our multi activity holidays where the variety comes included.
