WHERE IN THE WORLD
Certain areas go hand in hand with winter holidays. We have chosen resorts and villages in the Alps, the Pyrenees and Scandinavia based on accommodation, snow quality, absence of crowds and suitability for our activities.
ARCTIC SCANDINAVIA
There is nothing quite like winter inside the Arctic Circle. The air is clean, crisp and still, the magical landscape of frozen lakes, Northern Lights and snow-laden trees is almost dreamlike, and the range of winter activities available makes for a truly unique holiday experience.
Daylight hours Above the Arctic Circle in mid-winter (December to mid-January) the sun remains just below the horizon during the day, but it is not dark, as there is plenty of light reflected off the snow. The days lengthen quickly and by April there are more daylight hours than in the UK. Northern Lights The breathtaking Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are regularly seen from November to late April on clear nights in latitudes close to the Arctic Circle. In a week in the North you would be unlucky not to have at least one sighting. Temperatures In regions close to the Arctic Circle temperatures during the winter range from -30°C to +5°C. Christmas will normally be the coldest, but the temperatures rise as the days lengthen, and April can see temperatures around -10°C to +5°C. The Arctic cold is a dry cold, and when dressed correctly -20°C can actually feel very pleasant. The coldest months of January and early February are the most scenic. With the sun low in the sky, the light is stunning, and the trees often are caked in heavy snow. CENTRAL FINLAND
