ICELAND LONG WEEKENDS ICELAND ADVENTURE WEEKEND ICELAND · 4 DAYS · GRADE: B Snowmobiling, glacier exploration, geysers, waterfalls, the Blue Lagoon and lively Reykjavik Iceland is a great winter destination and the fashionable city of Reykjavik, with its backdrop of snowy peaks, is lively at any time of year. Within just a couple of hours drive of the capital are some of Iceland's most famous sights, even more spectacular in their winter costume. This weekend of high adventure spends two nights in the capital and one night in a rural guesthouse in the wilds of the `Land of Ice and Fire'. We discover the awe-inspiring volcanic and glaciated landscape on foot, by snowmobile, and using crampons and ice-axes on a sensational glacier walk. There's also plenty of time left for sampling Reykjavik's famous nightlife, or just soothing aching muscles in the famous Blue Lagoon. Monday morning will seem a world away. Only ITINERARY Day 1: Fly from Heathrow to Keflavik Airport (13.00 - 16.00). Transfer to Reykjavik and to local outdoor thermal baths. Overnight in the Sunna Guesthouse. Day 2: Head to snowfields for snowmobile trip (2 persons per machine); on to Thingvellir lake and volcanic rift, Gulfoss waterfall and the geysers at Geysir. Continue along south coast towards the glaciers. Day 3: A full day glacier exploration on Solheimajokull glacier - crampons, iceaxe and rigid boots provided. Introduction to ice-climbing if conditions allow. Return to Reykjavik. Day 4: Transfer to Blue Lagoon, Iceland's most famous thermal pool. Continue to Keflavik for flight to Heathrow (16.30 - 19.30). SUNNA & DRANGSHLID GUESTHOUSES We spend Thursday and Saturday nights at the Sunna Guesthouse in Reykjavik. This modern establishment is located next to the well known hilltop church and within walking distance of the main shopping street. Twin and double rooms have shared bathrooms; upgrade available for en suite rooms.
