TASSILI PLATEAU & HOGGAR MOUNTAINS
17 DAYS HOTELS/CAMPING ANCIENT KINGDOMS AND SAHARAN LANDSCAPES OF ALGERIA Boasting a wealth of UNESCO sites from the Kasbah of Algiers to Tassili N'Ajjer deep in the Sahara, Algeria has everything for the adventurous traveller. We explore the historic sites of the north and fly south for an epic desert crossing through some of the Sahara's most incredible landscapes from the dramatic plateau and rock art of Tassili to the huge sand dunes of Tin Merzouga and the Hoggar mountains. Roman Algeria We spend time at the beginning and end of our tour discovering Algeria's Mediterranean coast including some of North Africa's most impressive ancient sites. Steeped in the region's turbulent history, we explore the Tipaza, variously controlled by Carthage, the king of Mauritania and the Roman Empire. In Algiers we visit the National Museum of Antiquities and the city's atmospheric Kasbah, originally built in the 16th century as an Ottoman Fort, which has played a central role in Algeria's contemporary history during the struggles against the French. Ghardaia & Tassili N'Ajjer Flying south we reach Ghardaia, a unique and traditional city made up of five towns each on a hill, founded in 1053, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. A second flight takes us to the incredible landscapes, evocative wilderness and fabulous rock art of the great Sahara. Initially heading east we reach Jebel Tadrart and drive through El Biredj canyon to spend time exploring the vast sand dunes of Moul el Naga and Tin Merzouga. Returning to Djanet, there is an opportunity to climb the Tassili plateau for stunning views over the plains and to see the famous rock art of the area. Across the Desert to Hoggar Following the wadis of Oued Tafassasset and Tadent we turn west to Youfarlal and Youfihakit. Here huge rock formations and mushroom shaped boulders are surrounded by softly rolling sand and spectacular needle
