Salt Cathedral & Villa de Leyva After exploring the historic centre of the capital Bogota, we head north via the other-worldly salt cathedral at Zipaquira to Villa de Leyva. Here, nestled in the foothills of the Andes, time seems to have stood still in a town that was declared a national monument in 1954. Stone streets absorb the sun's rays that bounce off the bright pastel colours of the balconied colonial buildings; a wonderful place to explore and absorb the warmth of the people and the town. Coffee & Glaciers A short flight brings us to a lush landscape of terraced coffee plantations where a mix of temperature, altitude and rainfall combine to make one of the world's best coffee growing areas. From our comfortable base at a converted finca (farm) near Manizales we have a full day in Los Nevados National Park where we can walk up to Glacier del Ruiz and unwind in the thermal pools afterwards. Continuing on to Armenia we have free time to visit a coffee plantation, ride on a bamboo raft down river or enjoy the nearby botanical and butterfly gardens. Caribbean Coast The Americas' colonial jewel, Cartagena's captivating streets move to a laid-back Caribbean rhythm in the day and pulse to a Latin beat in the evenings. This spectacular walled city, once sacked by Sir Francis Drake, has seen numerous battles for control over its key position as a trading port.
