From Tokyo to Nagasaki Beginning our journey in Japan's eclectic capital allows us a chance to contrast the country's vibrant modern enterprise with its ancient past, with plenty of opportunities to explore, before flying down to the southern port of Kagoshima. From here we take a fast ferry across to the island of Yakushima, our base for the solar eclipse and famous for its UNESCO protected primeval forests. We then return to Kagoshima, to take the train north towards the bustling port city of Nagasaki, the ancient gateway into Japan which for over 200 years remained its only contact with the outside world. Ancient traditions & rural bliss Boarding the famous bullet train, our journey that takes us via the emotive and poignant memorial of Hiroshima a city that will forever live in infamy towards the beautiful ancient temples of Kyoto. Japan's once powerful capital, Kyoto is a city steeped in the reminders of its heritage, with some 2000 temples dotted throughout its charming environs. We have two full days here to enjoy this most enchanting of spots, before another train journey takes us to the idyllic landscapes around Hakone for a chance to see iconic Mount Fuji and walk on an ancient footpath - the Tokaido Trail.
