Most were drawn to the islands strategic position but even they couldnt fail to have been amazed by its natural beauty. No wonder Aphrodite the Goddess of Love is associated with the island. There are lofty mountains, fairytale castles, pretty harbours, shipwrecks, wild donkeys and ancient remains to discover as we explore on foot, 4WD, by bus and maybe even by donkey! SHIPWRECKS & CASTLES OF KYRENIA From our base just outside the pretty harbour town of Kyrenia we first set out to explore St Hilarion's Castle a fairytale building dramatically perched in mountain crags overlooking the Mediterranean. Then it's back to Kyrenia, where Venetian warehouses converted to restaurants and bars line the harbour-side of the old town, and the famous castle stands guard over the entrance to the harbour. We'll walk its ramparts and explore inside, including a visit to the amazing Shipwreck Museum. FACTFILE Itinerary Day 1 Fly London/North Cyprus. 2 Bus then walk to St. Hilarion Castle; return to Kyrenia to explore castle and Shipwreck Museum. 3 Visit Bellapais Abbey; drive to local farm to see farm life and pick seasonal fruit; free time on beach. 4 Free day; optional visit to Nicosia. 5 Drive in 4WDs then walk with donkeys (numbers permitting) to Incirli Cave; drive on to Kantara Castle and Buyuk Konak for overnight. 6 Drive in 4WDs into Karpas Peninsula in search of wild donkeys; visit local village to see how traditional bread and cheese is made; from village take a short walk to visit the mosaics at Sipahi Basilica; continue to Dipkarpas. 7 Fishing trip and visit to Apostolos Andreas Monastery; barbecue lunch on beach cooking own fish; free on beach. 8 Fly London. Ref FNC DATES & PRICES IN £ first of several visits into rural Cyprus. After a free day to relax, perhaps with a visit to Nicosia we set off east. Our journey in 4WD vehicles sees us stop a few kilometres short of Incirli Cave, where we have an opportunity to stretch our legs and walk to the cave in the company of a local farmer and his donkeys some of which can give children a ride (donkey numbers permitting). After our visit to the cave we continue to Kantara Castle to enjoy its stunning coastal views. On returning to your accommodation there is the opportunity to experience rural village life including the possibility of helping milk the goats. Those in the Karpas Peninsula, however, are wild and it's these that we set out to find on our donkey safari! Our day will be spent looking for the donkeys, visiting a local village to see how traditional bread and cheese is made and visiting an ancient basilica to see amazing mosaics. Finally we end our adventures with a boat trip to fish for our barbecue lunch a great way to finish our look at a different side of Cyprus. Cape Zafer Apostolos Andreas Monastery RURAL CYPRUS Next we set out for Durrell's Bellapais where we visit the abbey and can ourselves sit beneath the Tree of Idleness.
