ALGIERS & ANCIENT KINGDOMS 4 DAYS HOTEL HIGHLIGHTS OF NORTHERN ALGERIA Following a troubled recent history, Algeria is once again emerging as a world-class destination for the adventurous traveller. On this short journey of discovery, we explore the city of Algiers and the ancient sites of the surrounding Mediterranean coastline and include two UNESCO World Heritage sites the Kasbah of Algiers and the ancient Punic trading post of Tipaza. Modern and Ancient Algiers The expanding metropolis of modern Algiers still preserves some of the most evocative sites in North Africa. Prime amongst them is its Kasbah, built as an Ottoman Fort in the 16th century. Standing on one of the finest coastal sites on the Mediterranean, overlooking islands where a Carthaginian trading-post was established in the 4th century BC, the Kasbah contains the remains of the citadel, old mosques and Ottoman-style palaces. During our time here we'll also visit the Bardo Museum to learn more of Algiers' history and the Cathedral of Notre Dame D'Afrique with its Roman and Byzantine influences. Ancient Kingdoms and Roman Cities West along Algeria's Mediterranean coast and steeped in the region's history, we explore the site of Tipaza, an ancient Punic trading-post conquered by Rome and turned into a strategic base for the conquest of the kingdoms of Mauritania. It comprises a unique group of Phoenician, Roman, palaeochristian and Byzantine ruins alongside monuments such as the Kbor er Roumia, the great royal mausoleum of Mauritania. Close by we also spend time at Cherchell, once the capital of a Ref AAL Mauritanian kingdom and later named Caesarea in honour of the Roman emporer, before our journey ends back in Algiers.
