6 DAYS HOTELS/GUESTHOUSE EXPLORING ARMENIA
Monastery at Tatev/Sean Hughes
Ref AAA
A land of soaring mountains and canyons, this short tour aims to show off the countrys beauty and the friendliness of the people. The monasteries are one of the remarkable features of Armenia not only for their architecture and the fact they have survived through the millennia, but for their physical location perched on mountain tops or in the recesses of canyons their remoteness ensuring their survival, and each location seemingly picked for dramatic views. Our trip includes Yerevan and its rugged hinterland, along with the little visited South, following the old Silk Road over the mountains high above Lake Sevan.
Under the shadow of Mt Ararat Yerevan is dominated both physically and emotionally by vistas of the snowcapped peak of Ararat (5165m) which dominates the horizon. We explore the streets of Yerevan, home to some of the
former Soviet Unions finest architecture and strike out of the capital to the Greco-Roman temple of Garni, located on the edge of a precipitous cliff.Taking the back roads, one of the overwhelming memories for visitors is the charm and hospitality of the Armenians. Exploring the South & the Silk Road We head into the mountains towards the Iranian border and spend our time exploring chasms and canyons, visiting two of the most beautifully located monasteries Noravank and Tatev before crossing the range on a recently opened road following an old silk route. Selim Caravanserai reminds us of the history of this great trade route, which then descends to the remarkable cemetery of Noraduz with its thousands of intricately carved crosses. Skirting the high altitude Lake Sevan, famous for its reflections, we finally head west towards the indomitable silhouette of Ararat.
