Between October and January each year the waters of Tysfjord in northern Norway play host to killer whales hunting shoals of herring. In 2007 far less herring that ever before entered the fjord and therefore the Orcas, being fewer in number and more dispersed, were harder to spot. However, the magic of Tysford, with its dramatic snow-capped peaks, the chance to see huge eagles swooping down to catch fish, the dramatic Aurora Borealis that, weather permitting, lights up the night sky and the possibility on our Orca safari to witness the amazing spectacle of killer whales hunting in their natural environment has reinforced our commitment to continue offering this remarkable weekend of adventure.
Killer Whale Search After a lecture from our specialist whale guide we board our boat and head into the splendid isolation of
Tysfjord. We keep our eyes peeled for the distinctive, tall dorsal fins of the Orca and the giveaway flocks of seabirds and Fish Eagles that follow the whale pods. In 2006 99% of our passengers saw killer whales, however in 2007 this number dropped to 57%. It is almost impossible to predict what the 2008 season will bring, we are confident that the Orcas will return to Tysfjord but sightings will largely depend on the herring numbers. Wildlife & Wilderness Our second day at Tysfjord is free for you to choose from a number of optional trips depending on your interests. The most popular option is the opportunity (subject to availability and weather conditions) to take to the water in drysuits and, hoping we find them, snorkel amongst the Orcas. Other trips that can be organised locally by your tour leader include a hike into the surrounding hills to spot local wildlife such as elk, fishing trips and sea kayaking.
