PERSEIDS & COSMOS 8 DAYS HOTEL METEORS AND MILKY WAY Meteor showers or Perseids, so called because they appear to be coming from the constellation of Perseus, occur every year during the summer months in the northern hemisphere. 2007 however is a special year as there will be almost no moon, leaving the night sky darker than normal and making the blazing streaks of the meteor shower even more impressive. Accompanied at all times by our expert astronomer, Dr Francisco Diego from University College London, we will gain a deeper appreciation of our planetary system as well as share in the excitement of witnessing this spectacular natural event. Tenerife and La Palma Flying into Tenerife, we take the dramatic cable car ride up to the peak of El Teide, 3,718m. The short walk to the summit (30 mins) rewards us with panoramic views down across a volcanic moonscape, fringed by pine forests. Continuing to the colonial town of La Laguna we visit the Museum of Science and Cosmos - brought to life by our guest astronomer Francisco. The following day we fly to La Palma and our base for the next few days, the town of Santa Cruz. Over three nights we take the steep road that winds up above the Caldera de Taburiente to observe the night sky and the Perseids before returning to Santa Cruz early in the morning to rest at our comfortable hotel. Volcanic Viewpoint The remote island of La Palma in the Outer Canaries is renowned as a centre for astronomy and the island's highest peak, Roque de los Muchachos 2,426m, is home to one of the world's most important astrophysical observatories. From here, high above Ref SOC1 the inversion layer and free from sources of light pollution, we plan to observe the Perseids over three consecutive nights. The meteor shower reaches its zenith on 13th August, although it is still very visible for a few days either side of this peak. We will also use a telescope to scan the night sky, picking out the planet Jupiter, the Milky Way and other star formations.
